Story Of The “Revolution”

Revolution - Gateshead

Set The Scene….

A fresh faced young car enthusiast called Glenn Campbell spent most days upgrading and modifying his Miami blue Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI out of his families garage had a distant dream…

After modifying his own car and winning numerous awards at shows, he started his friend’s cars too. As North-East group leader for the “Pug” 205 GTI owner club and other car enthusiasts from other clubs were asking how do I mod like yours and where do I get those mods from…?

Soon he was organising group buys, track days plus working on a lot more cars.

So the dream of owning a Tuning Store was planned, but it was a long and very tough journey, eventually in the summer of 1997 “Revolution Performance Motorstore” opened its doors to the public….the dream had became a reality.
It was situated along the south side of the Gateshead quays way before the bright lights, Millennium Bridge and those swanky hotels arrived.

At that point in time there was only Halfords ( no Ripspeed in those days),
Charlie Browns , Motorworld and a few alarm and audio companies offering a limited selection of goods.
There was nothing like Revolution in the North-East… Glenn breaks into my story….” We called it Revolution for a couple of reasons, we wanted to Revolutionise the motor trade and the revolution of an engine….. We planned to offer a friendly and professional welcome to all car enthusiasts regardless of age or gender or budget. To set out a tuning salon theme with music playing and not Radio-4 humming in the background!”
It didn’t take long before they were the North East’s largest supplier of tuning upgrades and styling modifications and upgrades,
They also had the larger than life showroom with a full selection of alloy wheels on display, which was visually very impressive….TSW, BBS, OZ Racing, Wolfrace and fox racing were the dish of the day and they had them all under one roof – with Max Power, Fast Car & Redline magazines ruling the tuning scene.

Revolution inspired a massive social scene, involving themselves with many car clubs and forums.
It was a fantastic meeting place for car enthusiasts from all over the North, Saturday mornings, everyone turned up to check out each other’s rides and the crack was great. Revolution didn’t mind if you were buying or not, they still gave you a free cuppa.
Someone always had something new and different or illegal fitted to their cars…!

10 years down the line and with a growing customer base, the fast moving Revolution needed a bigger store to house all their stock and bigger workshops to fit them all too. In November 2007 they moved to a purpose built in a few miles away.

Located near the Metro Centre in Dunston and built on a huge one acre site, the building measures over 9,000sq ft and is fitted out with the latest workshop equipment, Hunter Alignment machine and low rise ramps for easy access.
The site also provides ample safe parking both for customers arriving and enough space to house car club meets and is conveniently located just off the A1.

Inside Revolution’s impressive showroom was definitely designed with the ultimate car enthusiast in mind.
The display of wheels is second to none in the UK and we lost count at over 150 different designs, plus there’s loads of Tuning parts on display mounted on massive wall stands too….everything from seats, to suspension, brakes and exhausts are all on show from the world’s biggest brands.

MOVING ONTO TODAY’S REVOLUTION AND THE LINE UP OF CARS YOU SPECIALISE IN.

Glenn gives us the lowdown…”we’re still proud to say we’re an independent family run business with my wife still doing the accounts and myself here at least 5 days a week. But the Industry has changed massively, gone are the wild bodykits and 18” wheels on Nissan Micras as most of our customers are looking for the OEM+ look.”
So is it all new cars these days Glenn…?

“No as we still look after all makes and models, old and new and still have a good line up of “big builds”. The Retro scene is massive too, but a lot of our customers of Japanese cars and European models are looking for subtle styling mods, larger rims with a nice increase of power. We now do a lot more servicing and tyres and our workshop is generally booked up for a week for Tuning work.”

“Were now official dealers for APR USA, VW Racing, AC Schnitzer with a few more brands are lined up for 2016 and beyond.”

“Our mail-order department deals with over 200 phone calls per day and we ship to all over the UK and to over 50 countries world-wide. Makes me very humble and so proud of what myself and the Team have achieved”
He goes on to say…

“We all love piling outside when something radical turns up, a 50’s hot rod for alignment or a spanking new RS6 in for a 700+ bhp remap…it’s in our blood..We just love it..!”

Both offer “the true one stop shop” for any car enthusiast….but don’t take my word for it – experience the
“REVOLUTION“ for yourself….dont forget to mention CCX and they might throw you in some discount too….!
